Chapter 9 - Someday I Will Understand

Jen woke up early Friday morning and rushed to the bathroom. She had been sick all week and at first thought she had the flu but now she wasn't so sure.

"Jen? You up yet?" Cali called from behind Jen's bedroom door.

"Yeah, hold on." Jen yelled after rinsing out her mouth.

"You look kinda pale." Cali said to her step-daughter after she opened the door.

"Yeah um... I don't feel too hot."

"Maybe you should go see a doctor today."

"I can't, Rob's party is tonight and I have to get everything ready."

"Chester can do it, you are going to the doctor Jen. You've been sick all week."

Jen groaned. "Alright."

******

"What is taking so long?" Jen muttered as she waited for the doctor to return with her test results.

"Calm down Jen I'm sure he'll be back soon." Cali said just before the doctor made his way back into the room.

"Alright Jenna, I have your test results but before I tell you I need to ask you a few questions first."

"Okay..."

"How old are you Jenna?"

"16... I'll be 17 next month."

"When was the last time you were sexually active?"

Jen hesitated while Cali looked at her. "2 weeks ago.." Jen answered avoiding eye contact with Cali.

"Well Jenna.. congradulations... you're pregnant."

"I'm what?" Jen asked looking at the doctor in shock.

"You're pregnant Miss Bennington.... 8 weeks along."

Cali looked at Jen and saw that the teen looked like she was about to pass out.

"May I have a few minutes alone with my step-daughter please?"

The doctor nodded and left the room.

"Jen, breathe..."

"This is not happening.."

"Calm down." Cali paused taking a seat in front of Jen. "You have to tell him Jen."

"I can't. What if he leaves me?" Jen wondered almost in tears.

"He won't leave you. He loves you."

Jen closed her eyes as a few tears slid down her cheeks.

Cali gently wiped them away. "It'll be okay Jen and honestly, this is the best birthday present you could ever give to Rob."

"You really think so?" Jen asked opening her eyes and looking at the older woman sitting in front of her.

"I know so."

******

"You feeling better Princess?" Chester asked as Jen walked down the stairs in her dress she was going to be wearing to Rob's party.

"Uh huh." She answered looking through her purse to make sure she had everything she needed.

"Good.. now you have fun tonight and don't come home too late."

"I won't daddy."

Jen made her way out to her car with a bag full of presents for Rob. After placing them in the trunk she got into her car and made her way to the party.

******

Jen looked around the room for Rob but couldn't find him anywhere. There were hundreds of people in the room and Rob could be anywhere.

"Brad, have you seen Rob?" Jen asked stopping Brad.

"Yeah.. he's over there." Brad answered pointing her in the right direction.

She thanked him and headed that way. She smiled when she spotted him but it quickly faded when Rob was drug off somewhere by one of his many friends.

"Hey Jen."

Jen turned around and smiled softly seeing Mike standing there.

"Hey.."

"You okay?"

"I'd be better if I could find Rob."

"Oh.. well that's why I'm here. He sent me to find you."

"He did? Where is he?"

"He's outside."

"Thanks."

Jen rushed through the crowd and went outside where she saw Rob smiling at her.

"There's my girl." He smiled taking Jen into his arms. "You okay?"

She smiled. "Yeah.. just tired."

"Well you've obviously been pretty busy planning this party."

"Yeah but it's more than that."

"Oh?"

"Yeah, Rob there's something I have to-"

"There he is!"

Two of Rob's friends from high school walked over dragging the birthday boy back inside leaving Jen standing there watching him.

Jen sighed and made her way back inside.

******

"Happy Birthday to you.. Happy Birthday to you.... Happy Birthday dear Rob... Happy Birthday to you."

Rob made a wish before blowing out the candles on his cake.

"Okay... you all cut the cake I'm gonna go find my girl."

"Not so fast Rob."

Rob turned around and was more than shocked to see Jen standing on the stage with a microphone in her hand.

"What are you doing baby?" He asked confused.

"Well there's something important I need to tell you and everytime I've tried you've been pulled away from me."

"Are you sure you wanna do it now?"

Jen glanced around the room before looking back at her fiance. "Yes... can you come up here?"

Rob walked past the rest of the guys and made his way onto the stage next to Jen. "Is everything okay?" The drummer asked, a look of worry on his face.

Jen smiled up at Rob forgetting she still had the microphone in her hands. "I'm pregnant, we're gonna have a baby."

Rob's face broke out into a smile. "Really?"

Jen nodded at him still smiling then squealed when he picked her up and swung her around in his arms.

Cheers could be heard from the crowd as Rob set Jen back down. She was still smiling as she looked into the crowd but it quickly faded when she saw the look on her father's face.

Chester turned around and stormed out of the room with Jen hot on his heels.

"Daddy! Daddy, wait!"

Chester stopped and turned around almost causing Jen to crash into him. "What?"

"Daddy... it's not as bad as it seems."

"It's not as bad as it seems? You're 16 Jenna! Is this why Rob asked for my permission to marry you?" Chester screamed down at his daughter.

"No... I... I just found out this morning." She told him in a tiny voice, her eyes glued to something on the ground.

"You have your whole life ahead of you Jenna and you go and screw it up with a baby!"

Jen looked up at her father and glared. "What?"

"Did I stutter?"

"I see.. so I screwed up your life huh?"

"No.. Jenna.. I didn't mean it like that."

"Sure you didn't."

Jen turned on her heel and ran back into the hotel leaving Chester out on the sidewalk staring at her.

"Jen! Jenna wait!" He called chasing off after her.

Chester looked around the hotel and couldn't find his daughter anywhere it was almost like she had disappeared. Chester leaned back against one of the walls and sighed running a hand through his hair.

"You didn't screw up my life Princess... you only made it better."
