Chapter 1: Role Establishment

“I should have asked for a ride,” Crystal said while walking briskly with a folder in her hand.

It was a nice spring day in Southern California. The sun was shinning high, but there was a slight breeze. The cool breeze caused Crystal’s dark red hair to flutter in the air and into her face. She had to flip her hair to quickly get it out of her face. Her green eyes were shimmering in the sunlight as she focused them on the path ahead of her. She had just moved to this neighborhood and this was going to be her first day of school. She told her parents that she was old enough to walk herself, but now she was having doubts.

“I can do this…wait, is my skirt lifting?” Crystal said to herself as she examined her wardrobe.

She was feeling self conscious because she decided to wear a pleated pink skirt with a white, pink striped polo shirt and white sneakers. The skirt would lift slightly every time the wind blew and it was causing her to be more nervous. She wanted her first day to go smoothly.

“Crap!” Crystal exclaimed as her folder slipped out of her hands.

She carefully bent down to pick up the folder. She was so worried about her shirt as she bent down that she wasn’t paying attention to her surroundings. She was at the corner of the block and around the bend were a group of boys. They were laughing and playing around, completely oblivious to Crystal’s presence.

“Hey Joe! Go long, dude,” one of the boys said as he held up a rugged football.

Joe ran and turned backwards to catch the ball. The ball went flying through the air and he jumped up to catch it. It just so happened that he was extremely close to Crystal and at that very moment she was raising after retrieving her folder. As Joe grabbed the football and landed on the concrete, he lost his balance and tumbled backwards into Crystal. Crystal lost her footing as well and both of them fell on the concrete. All Joe’s friends laughed at the scene before rushing up to help the pair.

“Man, that was priceless!” one of the boys exclaimed.

“You should have seen your face when you fell!” another added.

The boys started laughing again and cracking jokes about it. Crystal, however, didn’t find the situation funny, but she didn’t have the courage to lash out at them about it. She simply walked off, but before she could go far, Joe stopped her.

“Sorry about that, I didn’t see you there,” he said after he caught up with her.

“Thanks, it’s okay,” she replied.

Crystal hadn’t actually looked at Joe after he bumped into her, but she now that she was looking at him, she was taken by his appearance. Although, he looked like every other guy around her age, there was something about him that Crystal found irresistible. She was staring into his dark brown eyes.

“I’m Joe,” he said as he held out his hand.

“Oh…Crystal,” she replied, snapping out of her trance and shaking his hand.

Later that day, Crystal finally made it to her new middle school. She patiently waited in the office for her class schedule. The front desk lady gave it to her after her escort arrived. Crystal’s escort was a thin blond girl, who looked surprisingly older than her age. Her name was Shelli and they became instant friends. Shelli was very talkative, so while she was showing Crystal around, she never ran out of things to say.

“I know you’ll love it here. It may seem like a drag now because you’re new and all, but with me as your friend, this transition should be a smooth one,” Shelli explained as they were walking.

“Are there any cute guys here?” Crystal asked as she stopped at a classroom and saw some non-attractive boys.

“It depends on what you like. Honestly, I’d never date a guy here. They’re too immature for me,” Shelli replied and both girls laughed.

“So do you know a guy named Joe?” Crystal asked, suddenly curious about the guy she just met.

“I might…describe him to me,” Shelli replied.

Crystal went into as much detail as she could about Joe. It wasn’t much because she didn’t know that much about him. Shelli seemed to know of him though because he apparently dated her older sister. Shelli was surprised that Crystal would like a guy like Joe. He wasn’t exactly the nicest guy in town when it came to dating and girls in general.

“You might as well forget about him. He’s way out of your league,” Shelli stated.

“How do you know what my league is?” Crystal snapped.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean any offense. It’s just that he’s like a player and a lot of girls already like him, which gives him this huge ego.”

“I don’t think he’s like that.”

“Trust me, you’ll find out what he’s like soon enough.”

When Crystal was on her way home, she ran into Joe again. It was a pleasant surprise for her because this time he didn’t have his posse with him. Crystal figured that this would be the best time to figure out if Shelli was telling the truth.

“So how was your day?” Joe asked before Crystal could begin questioning him.

“It was good. I made a friend,” Crystal answered.

“Just one?”

“Well, I met a lot of people, but Shelli, that’s her name, was the only one with friend potential.”

“Oh…she’s not Shelli James, is she?”

“Why do you ask?”

“I just wanted to know if she said anything about me. She likes to bad-mouth me because me and her sister used to date and it ended badly.”

“She did say some interesting things about you.”

“Well, I’m not a really bad guy if that’s what she told you. Yeah, I do have relatively short relationships…”

“Better known as flings.”

“Yeah, that. I’m just not into the whole one girl thing yet. I figure that I have my whole life ahead of me and all that serious relationship stuff can wait.”

Crystal didn’t see anything wrong with this because he was kind of right, they did have their whole lives ahead of them. Then she started wondering where Joe lived because she was almost home and he was still walking with her.

“So where do you live?” Crystal asked as they were approaching her house.

“Right over there,” Joe replied while pointing at the house across the street from hers.

“Gees, we’re like neighbors!”

“Where’s your house?”

Crystal showed him and he seemed to be just as pleased as she was. He was smiling at her again and Crystal really hoped that he liked her. She just had to know for sure.

“Joe, it’s been really nice talking to you,” Crystal said.

“Yeah, it really has. I think that…” Joe started.

Crystal was hanging on to his every word. She just knew he was going to say that he wanted her to be his girlfriend or something along those lines.

“…we’re going to be great friends,” Joe finished with a smile.

Crystal never thought that one sentence could be so frustratingly disappointing, but there it was. The boy she liked just wanted to be friends.
