Chapter 5: Changes

Brad was gushing inside about his good fortune because he got to drive Crystal around. Joe didn’t want Crystal wandering the streets of L.A. alone and he had some songs to work on in the studio. Of course, Brad offered to chauffer Crystal and Joe actually agreed to that. Joe wasn’t happy about the whole thing, but he figured that Crystal would be okay in Brad’s hands.

Shelli decided to hang out with Cali and the other guys at the studio. She was really going because Rob was going to be there and she wanted to be around him as much as possible. Crystal knew what Shelli was up to and didn’t make a fuss about Shelli not coming with her.

At the moment, Brad was driving and Crystal was just looking out the window of the passenger seat. She didn’t want to look at Brad for some reason. She felt this attraction toward him and tried her best to keep it hidden from him.

“So where are we going again?” Brad asked as he glanced in Crystal’s direction.

“I want to go shopping, but I don’t want to pay a lot of money. So I figured that we should go to The Alley,” Crystal explained, still looking out the window.

“You’re talking about that swap meat place in the Valley, right?”

“Yep, that’s the one.”

Crystal felt really unusual being with Brad and she assumed it was because she liked him a little bit. She kept telling herself that the feeling would pass and that Brad was just a crush.

“So what’d you do in Richmond?” Brad asked, just trying to strike up a friendly conversation.

“Nothing exciting. I worked at random places and took some college courses,” Crystal answered.

“Why’d you go there? I’m just asking because it doesn’t it doesn’t sound like you actually had to be there or anything.”

“I was tired of my parents and some other things.”

“What things?”

“My surroundings, I just needed a change of scenery.”

In Crystal’s head, she added that she needed to get away from Joe. It was nice being around him in theory, but in reality, she was dying inside every time he was with another girl. To her, it was like he was flaunting the fact that he didn’t want her in her face.

“What’s the deal with you and Joe? He says that there’s nothing to tell, but I get the feeling that there’s something more to this story. I understand completely if you don’t…” Brad started and got cut off by Crystal.

“It’s okay, I’m comfortable with talking about it. To put it simply, Joe and I hooked up once. We had been friends for a long time and we almost ruined that. Joe wasn’t looking for a relationship, so we decided to stay friends,” Crystal explained while seeing flashbacks as she spoke.

“You and Joe?” Brad asked, completely shocked at this new information.

“Yeah, is that so hard to believe?” Crystal inquired, now turning to look at Brad.

“Of course it is! Joe’s this goofball and you seem way out of his league,” Brad replied.

“That’s funny because I remember me being out of his league,” Crystal said, not really talking to Brad.

Brad didn’t think that such a thing could be possible. He glanced at Crystal again and she seemed to be absorbed in her thoughts, which made me wonder what was on her mind. Crystal was thinking about her past and how things had changed. What Brad said had amused her so much, that a smile crept on her face and she didn’t realize it.

“What’s so funny?” Brad asked, making Crystal realize that she was smiling.

“I’m sorry, I was just thinking about what you said,” Crystal responded as she tried to cover her smile with her hands.

“Don’t,” Brad said and removed her hands from her face, “You have a beautiful smile.”

Crystal’s smile broadened and Brad smiled back at her. Then he continued concentrating on the road, but never releasing her hand. Crystal looked down at the hand he was holding and found that she enjoyed his warmth.

“If he’s not bothered by it, then neither am I,” Crystal thought.

Shelli was at the studio sitting on a couch with Cali and talking. The guys were busy working and barely paid them any attention. Shelli couldn’t help, but look in Rob’s direction every few seconds. He caught her staring a couple times and smiled at her. It made her blush a little, but she smiled back anyway.

“Why don’t you talk to him?” Cali asked after she realized what Shelli was doing.

“I can’t, he’s busy,” Shelli replied.

“Oh, that can be easily fixed,” Cali said and then whistled to catch the guys’ attention, “How’s about we do lunch, you guys look like you could use a break.”

“Cool, let’s go then,” Mike said as he got up from his seat and the others followed suit.

“See, it’s that easy. Now go talk to him,” Cali whispered to Shelli and ran off to walk with Chester.

Rob was lagging behind everyone else, so Shelli waited in her seat until he passed. She wanted to talk to him, but didn’t know what to say. She figured that she’d just say the first thing that came to mind.

“I always thought it’d be cool to touch my nose with my tongue,” Shelli said and instantly regretted it.

Shelli was mentally slapping herself. She never thought that the first thing to come to her mind would be so stupid. Rob, however, didn’t mind it because he thought she was cute. He thought it was a funny thing to say, so he laughed. Shelli mistaken his laughter as him laughing at her. This made her wanted to run and hide.

“That was funny,” Rob said after his laughter subsided.

“It was just the first thing to pop into my head,” Shelli admitted.

“It’s cool…they say that Mick Jagger can do that,” Rob said.

“Yeah, I heard that,” Shelli replied.

Rob smiled at Shelli because he found her utterly fascinating. Shelli smiled back and was completely mesmerized by Rob. She couldn’t believe that a guy like this was smiling. She was spacing out and not paying attention to where she was going. They were about to walk out the double doors, but Shelli didn’t see them.

“Watch out!” Rob exclaimed.

Shelli snapped back into reality, but it was too late. She slammed straight into the doors and fell flat on the floor. Everyone heard the sound and rushed to see where the source was. When they saw Shelli lying on the floor, they were confused.

“Is she alright?” Cali asked as she knelt by Shelli’s side.

“What happened?” Joe asked, looking down at Shelli.

“I don’t know. One minute we’re talking and the next, she slams into the door,” Rob explained, not exactly sure of the facts himself.

“I think she’s regaining consciousness,” Dave said as Shelli sat up.

Shelli’s head hurt like crazy and she considered not getting up at all. She decided against that because she didn’t want anyone to panic. She opened her eyes and saw that everyone was staring at her. She wanted the floor to swallow her whole.

“So you want to talk about it?” Crystal asked as she sat on the bed next to her friend.

“No. I want to go home and cry myself into a comma,” Shelli said as she lay flat on her back and grabbed a pillow to smother her face in.

“It couldn’t have been that bad,” Crystal reasoned while watching Shelli smother her face in a pillow and let out a frustrated scream.

The girls were in Joe’s guest room, where they currently slept. They shared a large king sized bed with no complaints because it was really comfortable. At the moment, Crystal and Shelli were sharing stories about their day. Shelli refused to tell Crystal any details about her day because she felt that it was humiliating. However, her day wasn’t that bad after the fall, Joe made fun of her for the longest time, but the others just dropped it. She managed to avoid speaking to Rob again and simply chatted with the group as a whole.

“Let’s just forget about me. Tell me more about your day,” Shelli insisted after flipping over on her stomach and putting the pillow at her side.

“Now way! I won’t say another word unless you tell me what happened,” Crystal said as she shook her head to emphasize her opinion.

“It was classic!” Joe exclaimed as he walked into the room.

He was laughing at Shelli again. It was coming in the room just to check on the girls, but managed to hear parts of their conversation. He wanted to rag on Shelli a bit more, so he decided to tell the story to Crystal.

“You should have seen it, lil’ Chris! We were walking out the studio and then…BAM! Shelli slams into the door,” Joe said while visually acting out the entire thing.

“Ugh, this couldn’t get any worse,” Shelli groaned.

“That sounds awful! Was Rob there?” Crystal asked, sounding concerned about her friend.

“Oooh, does Shelli have a crush on Rob?” Joe teased and made kissing noises afterward.

“Shut the hell up!” Shelli shouted as she threw the pillow at him.

Joe just laughed as the pillow collided with his stomach. He tossed the pillow back on the bed and sat next to Crystal. He couldn’t help, but be annoying about this situation, it was his way of getting back at Shelli for being a bitch all these years.

“Can we stop talking about this? Please,” Shelli begged.

“Okay, I’ll leave it be for now. You’re going to have to tell me more about it eventually,” Crystal said.

“Thank god!” Shelli exclaimed.

“Oh, that reminds me. How’d your day go with Brad?” Joe asked.

“It went well actually. Brad’s a pretty cool guy,” Crystal said, remembering everything that happened that day.

It made her smile to think about Brad and Joe didn’t like that. He was getting jealous again and it was starting to show. Shelli looked at the two of them curiously. Crystal was in her head again and Joe was slightly glaring at her. Shelli wondered what all of this meant.

“Did I miss something?” Shelli asked.

“What do you mean?” Crystal asked as she looked at Shelli.

“I mean, while you were in a daze, Joe was looking at you weird,” Shelli replied.

“No, I wasn’t. You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Joe lied.

“Joe, is something wrong?” Crystal asked, now looking at him.

“No, lil’ Chris…umm, I’m gonna go now. You ladies have a good sleep,” Joe abruptly said and walked out the door.

“What the fuck was that?” Shelli asked as she sat up and looked at the door.

Crystal didn’t say anything because she didn’t know what that was either. She hoped that she hadn’t done anything to upset to because that was the last thing that she wanted to do. Shelli had a sneaky suspicion that Joe was beginning to have feelings for Crystal, but she didn’t say anything because she wasn’t sure just yet.

“So how was your day? You didn’t give me any details,” Shelli said, changing the subject.

“I didn’t want to say anything while Joe was in here. So don’t think that I was holding out on you or anything,” Crystal explained.

“Fine, fine. Just tell me what happened already,” Shelli commanded, eager to hear what the news was.

“Brad and I kissed!” Crystal shrieked as she flopped on her back on the bed.

“Holy shit! Are you serious?!” Shelli exclaimed.

“Yeah,” Crystal sighed with a smile on her face.

“Details! I want to hear all about this,” Shelli said.

Crystal was going on about what happened with her and Brad. She wasn’t aware that Shelli wasn’t the only one listening. Joe had a feeling that Crystal was going to tell Shelli the details of her day, so he waited outside their door and listened. He only wished that what he was hearing wasn’t true.
