Chapter 9: Catalyst

“So what did you want to talk about?” Crystal asked.

“It’s about Joe,” Brad lied.

“Is something wrong?”

“Not exactly, I’m just concerned.”

After Brad had picked up Crystal, he drove to his house. They were currently sitting in the living room and watching TV. Brad was flipping through channels, looking for something to watch and Crystal was eating a pickle sandwich. She was also humming to herself while she ate because she had a song stuck in her head.

Brad was glad that Crystal had been with Joe because now he could use Joe as an excuse. He had already decided that he wasn’t breaking up with Crystal and he had intended to pretend like their conversation from before didn’t happen, but Crystal wanted to talk about it.

“So what are you concerned about?” Crystal asked.

“I think that Joe is trying to take you away from me. I mean, why else would he be more than willing to pick you up in the middle of the night,” Brad said.

“That couldn’t be it. Joe’s my friend, he’s just trying to be helpful. Maybe if you would stay home some nights, I wouldn’t have to go to Joe,” Crystal snapped and took another bite of her sandwich.

“Crystal, I don’t want you going by Joe’s anymore. I just don’t think it’s right,” Brad said.

Crystal didn’t say anything. She finished her sandwich and got up. She was going to go upstairs and take a nap. She was really tired and didn’t want to talk anymore. She couldn’t understand why she had to stop going by Joe’s, but Brad could do anything that he wanted.

“Did you hear me?” Brad asked as he cut off the TV and walked up to Crystal.

“Yeah, I heard you, but I don’t see why I have to agree to that. It’s not like you’re going to stop staying out at night,” Crystal replied and started to walk off again.

“Look, I just don’t like Joe in out business. I also don’t like it when my girlfriend spends the night at random guy’s houses,” Brad stated after grabbing her hand to catch her attention and stop her from walking away.

“Joe’s my friend, not some random guy.”

“Why are you being like this? Is it because you like him or something?”

“What are you talking about?”

“The only reason you’d press this issue is if you liked him or something. It’s not like I’m saying that you can never see him, I’m just saying that I don’t want you spending the night over there.”

Crystal didn’t know why Brad decided to use that to get his point across, but it was working. Crystal didn’t want Brad thinking that, so she caved in. She was too tired to fight the issue anyway.

“Fine, Brad. I won’t spend the night at Joe’s anymore,” Crystal stated and snatched her hand away.

It was Chester’s turn to take care of Draven, so Samantha had dropped her son off at Chester’s place. At the moment, Cali was entertaining Draven in the living room while Chester was in the kitchen. He was popping popcorn for all of them because they were getting ready to watch a movie. Whilst this was happening, the phone rang.

“Phone, phone,” Draven said excitedly.

“I know, I know,” Cali replied as she went to answer it.

“I got it!” Chester shouted from the kitchen.

“Well, that takes care of that,” Cali thought.

Chester answered the phone and found out that it was Mike calling. Mike was upset about this situation with Jen and Brad. He told Chester that Jen had just called him and was complaining about Crystal.

“Honestly, I don’t know what she expects me to do,” Mike said.

“Just tell her that Brad’s his own person and that you can’t control what he does,” Chester replied.

“Yeah, like she’d take that for an answer.”

“Why doesn’t she just end it with him?”

“I don’t know. I told her to do that long ago, but she refuses. Something about Brad she just likes.”

Chester continued to listening to Mike rant about his cousin and Brad. Chester was really tired of talking about the whole thing because it was becoming redundant.

“So anything else happened today?” Chester asked, trying to change the topic of conversation.

“Yeah, Joe called me today. He said that Crystal was over his house again,” Mike replied.

“That’s not exactly new, man. She does this all the time.”

“When is she going to realize that Brad’s cheating on her?”

“If we keep covering for him like this…never.”

Chester and Mike continued to talking, but unbeknownst to them, Cali was listening. She went into the kitchen to see what was taking Chester so long and overheard bits of their conversation. She wondered who they were covering for and why they were doing it.

“Alright, man. I gotta go,” Chester said, getting tired of the conversation.

“’Kay, I’ll talk to you later,” Mike replied.

Chester hung up the phone and turned around. He saw that Cali was there and almost jumped out of his skin. He wasn’t expecting her to be in the room with him.

“Jesus, Cali. You scared the shit out of me,” Chester said.

“What was that all about?” Cali asked.

“Nothing,” Chester lied.

He hoped that Cali would leave him alone because he couldn’t lie to her. The microwave dinged and he got the popcorn and started to walk into the living room. Cali refused to have Chester just dismiss her like that, so she blocked his path.

“Chester,” Cali said sternly and stared him down.

“Brad’s back with Jen and hasn’t told Crystal,” Chester said and made his way around Cali.

“How long has this been going on?” Cali asked as he followed Chester.

“I don’t really know…a while,” Chester replied as he sat down.

Draven hopped on the couch next to his dad. Chester opened the popcorn bag and Draven grabbed a handful. Cali just stood there thinking about what Chester had said. She was furious that Chester could keep something like this from her.

“So who else knows?” Cali asked as she sat on the other side of Chester.

“All the guys,” Chester said and tossed popcorn into his mouth.

“Are you serious? How could you guys keep such a secret?”

“Cali, we were just trying to protect Crystal. We thought that she should find out from Brad himself and not some other way, but Brad is refusing to tell her.”

“Oh, he’s so not getting away with this.”

“What are you going to do?”

“What I do best.”

Cali got up from her seat and went to get her purse. She figured that she would drive straight to Brad’s house and tell Crystal the truth. As she was about to walk out the door, Chester stopped her.

“She might not believe you,” Chester stated.

“Why wouldn’t she? I couldn’t lie about something like this,” Cali said.

“Maybe you should talk to Shelli first.”

“Maybe you should be doing this instead of me.”

Cali was done with talking. She was pissed off and needed to vent. She didn’t want to take it out on Chester, so she left.

“I’m gonna need a cigarette, I see,” Cali thought.

“Stop it!” Shelli protested.

“Ah, I must have hit a soft spot,” Rob teased.

“Robert, I swear, if you don’t stop…”

“What? I can’t hear you.”

Rob and Shelli had gone out for lunch, but went to Rob’s house to kill time. They had been chatting and Shelli had brought up the fact that she was very ticklish. Rob wanted to test her confession, so he started tickling her. Shelli was laughing so hard that her face was beet red. She was rolling around on the floor and laughing maniacally. In between laughs, she managed to beg Rob for mercy.

“Okay, I’ll stop,” Rob said as he let her go.

“You are so dead,” Shelli replied and jumped on top of him.

Shelli was playfully hitting Rob and he’d block her hits. They were laughing and playing around. Shelli somehow rolled on top of Rob and pinned him down. Her hair was dangling in front of her face and lightly touching his face.

“So what now?” Rob asked seductively.

“Hmm, I don’t know. Have any ideas?” Shelli replied, smiling.

“I might,” Rob said as he slipped his hands from her grasp and wrapped them around her waist.

“Oh really, do tell,” Shelli said as she slackened her stance and inched her face closer to his.

They kissed, but it was brief because the doorbell rang. They tried to mute it out, but the person was persistent because the person was now banging on the door. Shelli rolled off Rob and sighed. Rob got up and answered the door to see Cali standing on his doorstep.

“Hey, Rob,” Cali said and walked right in.

“What’s up?” Rob asked as he shut the door.

Cali walked into the living room and saw Shelli lying on the floor. Shelli didn’t notice Cali there because she was staring at the ceiling.

“Did I interrupt something?” Cali asked with a raised eyebrow.

“No. Nothing at all,” Shelli replied as she scrambled to her feet.

“Right,” Cali said, grinning at Shelli.

“Alright, so I’m gonna let you two talk,” Rob said and exited the room.

“So what’s up?” Shelli asked.

Cali wanted to tease Shelli about her disposition. Shelli’s hair was wild and her shirt was wrinkled. Yet, Cali knew that she had something more important to discuss with Shelli.

“Brad’s been cheating on Crystal,” Cali said.

“Huh?” Shelli asked, not believing what she heard.

“Brad’s been seeing his wife, Jenna,” Cali clarified.

“Whoa, Brad’s married?” Shelli asked.

Cali knew that this was going to take a while. Cali explained the whole situation to Shelli and soon Shelli was just as pissed as Cali. Shelli wanted to kill Brad for doing something like this to Crystal.

“It all makes sense now. All those nights he wasn’t home…everything,” Shelli said as she thought about Brad’s outings.

“Yep, so now we have to tell Crystal,” Cali advised.

“Ugh, I seriously don’t want to do that.”

“I know, but someone has to do it.”

Shelli knew that Cali had a point, but she just didn’t want to be the one to hurt her friend like that.

“Let’s go then,” Shelli said.

The drive to Crystal’s house was an uneasy one. Cali was driving and smoking while Shelli was cursing Brad out in her mind. Each girl dreaded having to break the news to Crystal, but they knew it was something they had to do.

When they got to Brad’s house, they slowly walked to the door. After ringing the doorbell and knocking a few times, Brad answered it. Seeing Brad, caused both girls to snap.

“You lousy motherfucker,” Shelli spat and punched Brad in the face.

“What the fuck!” Brad exclaimed as he covered his face and stumbled back a bit.

“Don’t fucking pretend like you don’t know what’s going on,” Cali snapped.

Brad was at a loss for words, he didn’t really know what they were so riled up about. He never thought that they would know his secret. Brad backed up some more, but not fast enough because Cali rammed him into the wall. She was going to pound his face in, but he pushed her away from him. He quickly moved away from Cali, but Shelli was coming at him. So he ran and the girls followed him.

“You arrogant little prick!” Shelli shouted as she grabbed a vase and threw it in Brad’s direction, but he dodged it.

“You’re not fucking getting away,” Cali added as Brad tried to reach the door, but she blocked his path.

“Both of you are fucking insane!” Brad exclaimed after jumping over the couch and running towards the kitchen.

The girls followed Brad, but split up to trap him. Shelli grabbed another vase on her way and Cali grabbed a knife. Brad was caught between the two girls and they were inching towards him.

“Take this you piece of shit,” Cali raged as she thrush the knife at his chest.

Brad barely missed the blade as he slid away from Cali. The sharp knife slit his shirt and grazed his chest. He may have dodged that, but there was no escaping Shelli. She came from behind him and slammed the vase on his head. Brad fell and his head smacked the floor.

“Oh my god! Brad! Brad!” Crystal cried as she quickly wobbled toward him.

Crystal had been napping peacefully in the bedroom. Her eyes snapped open when she heard screaming and breaking glass. She rushed as fast as she could down the stairs. She saw her friends chasing Brad into the kitchen. The house was a mess and Crystal couldn’t believe what was happening.

Crystal made it into the kitchen in time to see Shelli slamming the glass on Brad’s head and him hitting the floor hard. Blood was lightly trickling down his face and Crystal was frantic.

“How could you do this!?” Crystal shouted with tears streaming down her face as she cradled Brad’s limp form.

“Brad totally deserved it,” Cali stated as she threw her knife aside.

“He’s been lying to you, Crystal,” Shelli added.

“About what? What could he possibly lie about that would cause such a reaction from you?” Crystal inquired, still holding Brad and trying to wake him up.

“He’s still married to Jenna,” Shelli answered.

“And he’s been fucking her behind your back. That’s why he’s never home, Crystal,” Cali added.

Crystal let go of Brad and just sat there. She heard what they were saying and she thought that it all made sense, but something wouldn’t allow her to accept it. Crystal couldn’t believe that Brad would be that cruel to her. Ultimately, Crystal concluded that her friends were not only lying, but they were also crazy.

“No, Brad wouldn’t do that,” Crystal said.

“WHAT!” Cali exclaimed, dumbstruck by Crystal’s response.

“Crystal, think about it. Why does Brad leave you all the time? Why won’t he marry you?” Shelli advised.

“Brad wouldn’t do that to me! So what if he goes out at night, he’s hanging out with his friends. And Brad will marry me when the time comes,” Crystal replied.

“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” Cali stated.

“Crystal, do you hear yourself? You’re just making up dumbass excuses for him,” Shelli retorted.

“Brad loves me, he would never hurt me,” Crystal said, now getting up.

“Tell me something, has he ever said that? Has Brad ever used those exact words?” Cali inquired.

“It doesn’t fucking matter. I know Brad loves me because he shows me that everyday,” Crystal snapped.

“Really? So leaving you alone all the time is a sign of love?” Cali asked.

“Enough! Who are you going to believe? Brad or us?” Shelli asked, getting fed up with arguing with Crystal.

Crystal closed her eyes and thought about that question. Shelli and Cali had been nothing, but good to her. Shelli had been her friend since middle school and Crystal knew that she was trustworthy. Yet, she couldn’t just give up on Brad like that. She was going to have his baby and she thought that it would be wrong of her to not stand by his side. Crystal opened her eyes and glared at Cali and Shelli.

“I choose Brad,” Crystal said.

Cali and Shelli’s mouths gaped open. They were in awe at Crystal’s blatant disregard of the evidence that they provided. Shelli couldn’t believe that Crystal was being this stupid and Cali was just shocked.

“Crystal, Brad’s cheating on you with Jen. You do understand that, right?” Shelli asked.

“No, he’s not. If you keep saying that, then I’m going to have to ask you to leave,” Crystal replied.

“He’s the liar and we have to leave,” Cali stated.

“Get out!” Crystal exclaimed and pointed to the door.

Brad moaned and blinked his eyes. He stayed on the floor, but watched everything. He saw Crystal pointing the girls out and he thought that the girls would resist, but they didn’t. Brad slowly sat up and the girls glared at him.

“I hope you rot in hell for this,” Shelli snapped at Brad as he eyes began to water.

“Fucking asshole…Crystal, you’re making a huge mistake,” Cali added.

“GET OUT!” Crystal shouted.

The girls left as Crystal requested. They figured that Crystal would eventually see the truth. They hoped that it wouldn’t be too late though.
