Chapter 6: Losing Control

Crystal jumped out of bed that morning, her heart was racing. Her sudden arousal caused her to perspire.

“What time is it?” Shelli groaned as she wiped the dew from her eyes.

“Umm, 5:30 am,” Crystal replied after checking the clock on the dresser.

“Wake me up at a more reasonable hour, please,” Shelli snapped and then pulled the covers up over her head.

Crystal wasn’t worried about Shelli’s mood. She was more concerned about that dream she had. It started off normal and then morphed into something else. First, the dream was just a replica of the events that happened yesterday…

Crystal was browsing around each miniature store with Brad at her side. Every time she wanted to buy something Brad insisted on paying for it. He wouldn’t let Crystal refuse, so she just let him buy her stuff, but she made sure not to get too many things. Whilst shopping, she and Brad talked and Crystal was beginning to like Brad a lot.

It was getting dark and the shops were starting to close, so they decided to head back to the car.

“Thanks for buying me all this stuff. You really didn’t have to,” Crystal said as they were walking.

“I know, I just felt like doing it,” Brad replied.

“That was really nice of you then.”

“Well, you make me want to do nice things for you.”

Crystal sensed that he was flirting with her and it made her blush a bit. She wasn’t accustomed to this kind of attention.

They made it to the car and Brad put all of her things in his trunk. Crystal was helping him because she figured that it was the least she could do. When that was finished, Brad closed the trunk and stopped short.

He was staring into Crystal’s eyes and it made Crystal’s heart pound. The way he was looking at her made Crystal feel as if he could see straight through her. She felt awkward, but she couldn’t look away from him. Then without warning, Brad pulled her close to him. Brad wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her. Instinctively, Crystal draped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him back…

Now the dream takes on a life of its own. Brad and Crystal are no longer at the car, but in Joe’s guest room. Brad’s leading Crystal to the bed and just as things get hot and heavy, Crystal wakes up.

“I barely know him,” Crystal thought.

Crystal needed to get Brad off of her mind so she decided to go for a jog. She put her messy hair into a pony tail and threw on some sweats with a white tank top. She figured that she’d just circle the block.

“Where are you?” Joe asked, speaking into his cell phone.

“I told you, I’m at that 7-Eleven that you went to that one time,” Crystal replied.

“What’d she say?” Shelli asked, standing next to Joe, trying to hear her friend on the other end.

Joe held up his index finger to indicate that he needed a minute. He really just wanted to locate Crystal and bring her back here. Shelli understood, so she said nothing more.

“Chris! There are millions of 7-Elevens and I don’t exactly remember which ones are which. How about a street name or something more specific,” Joe snapped.

“Hold on,” Crystal replied as she stopped a passerby and asked the name of the street she was on.

She told Joe where she was and hung up the phone. She only wanted to jog around the block, but she wound up going further than that. Her mind was so clouded that she didn’t pay attention to the direction that she went. When she snapped back into reality, it was too late.

She didn’t have her cell phone her, so she went searching for a pay phone. That caused her to walk a couple more blocks aimlessly. She finally ended up at 7-Eleven, which had a pay phone right in front of the building.

After talking to Crystal, Joe rushed out of the house with Shelli and drove to 7-Eleven. On the way there, Joe filled Shelli in on what was going on. Shelli would have found the whole situation laughable if Joe wasn’t so cranky.

Joe didn’t like waking up early because he wasn’t a morning person. When the phone rang at 7 am, he wasn’t exactly thrilled. Then he found out that the person calling was Crystal and she was stranded somewhere. Joe considered killing Crystal when he found her.

“You know, this could be a funny story one day,” Shelli said and Joe glared at her, “I guess not.”

Shelli decided not to speak until Crystal was in the SUV with them. Joe pulled to the side of the road by 7-Eleven and Crystal was there, sitting on the curb. He got out of the car and walked up to her. Shelli was right behind him. Although he was glad Crystal was okay, anger boiled inside of him with each step that he took. As soon as Crystal stood up to greet him, he slapped her. Crystal cried out from shock and rubbed her cheek.

“What the fuck were you thinking?! This is LA Crystal. You could have gotten hurt or something!” Joe shouted.

Crystal didn’t say a word and neither did Shelli. They were shocked at Joe’s behavior because he had never done anything like that before. Joe was so upset with Crystal that he just reacted without thinking. It wasn’t just that she got herself stranded, it was that she allowed Brad to kiss her. He wanted to smack some sense into her because to Joe, she was clearly losing her mind.

“Just get in the car,” Joe ordered as he got back into the driver’s seat.

Shelli decided to sit in the back with Crystal because of Joe’s unpredictable mood swing. During the ride, he was ranting about Crystal and how irresponsible she was being. Crystal was feeling so low that she just stared down at her hands and cried. When Shelli saw this, she found the courage to open her mouth.

“Okay, she gets it! Just stop fucking yelling already!” Shelli yelled.

“Don’t tell me what the fuck to do,” Joe snapped.

“I can do whatever the hell I want. Especially, when you are acting like an ass and hurt Crystal,” Shelli argued.

The words “hurt Crystal” echoed in Joe’s brain. He realized that in a fit of rage, he actually hit Crystal. He looked at her through his rear view mirror and saw that Crystal was crying.

“What the fuck did I do?” Joe asked in his head.

Crystal and Shelli decided to get out of the house. This idea worked in their favor because Cali stopped by Joe’s house, to invite them on a shopping spree. Crystal wasn’t that into shopping because of what happened, but she tried to put up this front like she was happy.

Joe had slapped Crystal so hard that her cheek was bruised. Crystal couldn’t take her mind off of how upset Joe was with her. She thought she was hiding all of this from Cali, but she wasn’t. Cali wanted to ask about that bruise, but decided against it. She figured that it wasn’t any of her business, but Crystal was acting so standoffish that Cali couldn’t take it anymore.

“Okay, what happened?” Cali asked.

Shelli placed the item she was holding back on its rack. She was prepared to lie for Crystal if Crystal didn’t want to tell Cali anything. Crystal looked at Shelli and Shelli took that as her cue.

“What do you mean?” Shelli asked, playing dumb.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that something happened to Crystal. I mean, look at her face, she’s got a bruise that looks pretty fresh to me. I just want to know how she got it,” Cali stated, placing her hand on her hip.

“You’re right, but it’s none of your business. If Crystal doesn’t want to say anything about it, then I suggest you butt out,” Shelli commanded.

Cali didn’t take orders too well, so she definitely wasn’t going to listen to Shelli. Crystal saw how the conversation was going and knew that she had to say something. Cali and Shelli looked like they were going to duke it out any minute now.

“It was just an accident,” Crystal said.

“What happened though?” Cali asked again.

“Joe was worried about me. I shouldn’t have run off like that. He was just so worried and I was so careless…It’s my fault, really,” Crystal explained as tears began to fall down her face.

“He hit you?” Cali questioned with a frown on her face.

“Crystal, don’t blame yourself for all this. Joe had no right to put his hand on you,” Shelli said, trying to soothe her friend.

“Oh, this is fucking unbelievable,” Cali stated and walked out the shop.

Crystal and Shelli had to run to catch up to Cali. Cali was briskly walking and talking on her cell phone. Crystal soon realized that she was on the phone with one of the guys.

“Tell him that I want to talk to him when I get there,” Cali said and then waited as the other person spoke.

“Please, Cali. Don’t do anything, Joe didn’t mean it,” Crystal pleaded.

“Like hell, guys don’t hit girls accidentally. I don’t care if we aren’t close friends, I won’t let this shit happen again,” Cali raged with the phone still at her ears.

“Crystal, I think that Joe needs to know that this isn’t acceptable behavior. You let him get away with so much crap that he just walks all over you,” Shelli said.

“Yeah. Well, tell him that he’ll find out when I get there,” Cali said to the person on the other end and then ended the call.

“Guys, it’s not that big of a deal. You’re all overreacting,” Crystal stated, still trying to get Cali to stop.

“No, it is a big deal and you’re just under-reacting,” Cali replied.

Shelli was on Cali’s side on this one, but Crystal was steadily disagreeing. Crystal didn’t know what Cali was going to do, but she knew that it wasn’t going to be anything good.

The girls got into Cali’s car and sped off. Cali was driving fast and Crystal was scared out of her mind. Shelli didn’t know what to think, but she knew that she didn’t want Joe repeating what he did. This time Shelli was sure that Joe was going to face the consequences of his actions.

Joe and the guys had been working steadily in the studio until Cali called. She called Chester, but wouldn’t tell him exactly what was going on. Chester was surprised that Joe didn’t seem edgy about any of this. Usually when Cali got like this, someone was going to get their ass kicked.

“Do you know why she’d be so angry?” Chester asked, a little worried about Joe.

“I have a hunch,” Joe replied, thinking about Crystal.

“Dude, she sounded pissed. You better have more of a hunch about this,” Chester stated.

“Whatever you did must have been pretty bad,” Mike commented.

“Last time she got upset like this, poor Rob got a black eye,” Dave remembered.

“She packs a mean punch,” Rob added and grimaced at the thought.

Joe also remembered when Cali knocked Rob out. Rob was talking out of his ass and Cali told him to stop, but he didn’t listen. In the end, Rob got a black eye and was seriously afraid of Cali. Joe didn’t want that happening to him, but he knew that he’d deserve it. Besides, he knew that once Cali got pissed, it was hard to calm her back down.

“Cali, please don’t!” Crystal begged, now seriously crying as they entered the studio.

Cali wasn’t listening to her. When she walked into the room that the guys were in, all she saw was red. She ran up to Joe and punched him. With that one swift and painful punch, Joe fell to the floor. Cali jumped on top of him and kept hitting him. It took three guys to separate Cali from Joe. She was thrashing in Chester’s arms to get back at Joe, but Chester was holding her tightly, so she wasn’t going anywhere.

“Whoa, what is going on here?” Dave asked.

“Joe apparently likes hitting girls, which only proves how weak he really is,” Cali spat.

“That isn’t true!” Crystal exclaimed, her eyes red and puffy from crying so much.

“Crystal, what happened to your face?” Rob asked, noticing the bruise.

Everyone’s attention was on Crystal now. Crystal touched the bruise as if she was shocked that it was that noticeable. She knew that there was nothing she could say to clear Joe’s name.

“He didn’t mean it…”Crystal started, but got cut off.

“I’ll fucking kill you for this,” Brad said as he charged at Joe, who was sitting on the floor now.

Joe quickly jumped to his feet to protect himself, but Dave got between the two of them. Dave was determined to stop all the fighting in this studio. Mike went to Brad and held him back, so that Brad couldn’t do anything.

“Okay, there has to be a better way to solve this without all the violence,” Mike said while holding Brad back.

“Maybe it would be best if we went home,” Shelli suggested.

“No, it’s my fault. You shouldn’t have to leave because of me,” Joe said and then turned to Crystal, “I’m sorry, lil’ Chris. I lost my temper and that was wrong.”

Crystal nodded in acceptance of Joe’s apology. She knew the entire time that he didn’t mean to hit her. Shelli saw that Crystal was quickly forgiving Joe and shook her head in disapproval.

“When will she learn?” Shelli asked in her head.

“Since you guys don’t want to leave, you could stay at my place…until things cool down that is,” Rob offered.

“That sounds reasonable,” Chester said.

It was settled, the girls were now going to stay with Rob while Joe worked through his issues. Joe didn’t want the girls to go, but he realized that he didn’t have a choice in the matter.
