Chapter 11: Consequences

“What the fuck happened?” Cali inquired, snatching the phone from Joe, “Crystal, Crystal!”

“Joe, she’s okay, right?” Shelli asked as Joe got up.

He went got his keys and walked towards the door. He couldn’t talk right now. He had to figure out where Crystal was and make sure that she was okay. He left the girls without saying a word.

“I’m going to hang up,” Cali said as she started to put the phone on its cradle.

“No, something might happen,” Shelli said and snatched the phone from her.

“She might try calling us and the phone will be busy.”

“No, Joe has call waiting.”

The girls argued back and forth about the phone. While they were arguing, someone was talking on the other end. The girls heard it and stopped talking.

“Hello? Hello?” Shelli said.

“Yes, who is this?” some lady asked.

“Shelli…who is this?” Shelli responded.

“You don’t give a stranger your name,” Cali stated and Shelli shushed her.

“I’m Ann…there’s been an accident and I…” Ann said.

Shelli dropped the phone and Cali scrambled to get it. Shelli was stunned to hear what Ann had said. The words kept replaying in Shelli’s mind and she knew that things were bad. While Shelli was having a mental breakdown, Cali was talking to Ann.

“Hi, I’m Cali…tell me what happened,” Cali said.

“Okay…I was in my car on the opposite side of the street and I saw the whole thing. The girl here ran a red light and another car hit her. People have called 911 and an ambulance is on the way,” Ann explained.

“Wait, where exactly are you?” Cali asked.

Ann gave her some street names and Cali went searching for a paper and pen. When she found what she was looking for in the kitchen, she jotted the street down. Ann continued explaining the entire situation to Cali.

“Okay, stay on the phone. I’m going to tell my friend what’s going on,” Cali said.

“Alright,” Ann replied.

Cali went back into the living room and saw that Shelli was crying. Cali felt bad for Shelli because she was going to deliver even more bad news.

“Shelli…” Cali started.

“Is she dead?” Shelli asked.

“I don’t know, sweetie,” Cali replied and sat next to Shelli.

Cali really regretted what she was about to say, but she knew that it had to be done. Cali sighed and started giving Shelli the bad news.

Joe decided driving to Brad’s house because he figured that Crystal had to be somewhere between his house and Brad’s. Joe was delayed because there was so much traffic. It was at a standstill right now and Joe was extremely frustrated. He saw people walking around and decided to get out of his car. He wanted to find out what was going on.

“What happened?” Joe asked a random person.

“Oh, there was an accident up ahead. The ambulance is there and everything,” the guy replied.

Joe had a bad feeling about this and decided to check out the scene. He raced up to the ambulance and the other gathering people. The police were sectioning the accident off from passerbys, so Joe couldn’t get too close.

Joe strained to see over other people’s heads and managed to catch a glimpse of the wrecked car. His jaw dropped when he realized that it was Crystal’s car. He wanted to see Crystal, so he pushed and shoved his way to the front of the crowd.

“Sir, stay back,” an officer commanded.

“I think that’s my friend,” Joe said as he tried to push pass the man.

“Stay back!” the officer shouted as he pushed Joe back.

When Joe was pushed back, he saw a person being carried on a stretcher. Joe thought his eyes were deceiving him because this person looked like Crystal. He maneuvered around the officer and ran toward the stretcher. He realized when he got there that it was Crystal.

“Crystal, wake up!” Joe demanded as he lightly shook her.

“Sir, you have to move, so that we can get her to the hospital,” an EMT ordered.

“Crystal!” Joe shouted ignoring the EMT.

The EMTs holding the stretcher were arguing, trying to get Joe to leave. The officer form before saw the scene and decided to let Joe go with the EMTs. He felt bad for Joe because he realized that the girl on the stretcher probably meant something to Joe.

Joe got in the ambulance with Crystal and the EMTs. They asked him questions and Joe answered as best as he could. He held Crystal’s hand during the drive and prayed that she pulled through.

The gang was in the waiting room of the hospital. Cali and Shelli talked to Ann and then to an officer on the scene of the accident. The officer told them where Crystal was being taken and the girls rushed over to the hospital. On their way, they called the guys and gave them updates on the situation. Dave had to call Brad because no one else would since they were so mad at him.

Brad left Jen at his house and arrived at the hospital right after everyone else. Cali and Shelli gave Brad the evil eye as he sat down in the waiting room with the rest of them. Everyone was quiet as they waited to hear news about Crystal.

“I wonder where Joe is,” Shelli wondered aloud.

That was just the thing to open the flood gates. Shelli didn’t mean to open her mouth, but she couldn’t take the silence. The tension in the room was just too much for her to bear.

“Probably with Crystal…who’s dying because someone broke her heart,” Cali snapped as she eyed Brad.

“What are you looking at me for? It’s not like I crashed her car,” Brad replied.

“You might as well. She would have never gotten in that car if it weren’t for you,” Shelli retorted.

“What? I tried to stop her,” Brad said.

“Obviously, you didn’t try hard enough,” Chester suddenly piped in.

“You can’t put this all on me,” Brad stated as he got up.

“Who else is to blame?” Mike argued and got in Brad’s face.

“It’s not like you all were rushing to tell her what was going on,” Brad raged.

“Oh, so you going to put it on us. We didn’t sleep with Jen behind Crystal’s back,” Dave said.

“And you’re the one who should have told her,” Rob added.

The whole group was on their feet arguing with Brad. The nurses were worried about this situation and were going to call security. Joe happened to be walking up to the group at the same time. He told the nurses that he would take care of it.

“Shut-up! There are more important things going on here,” Joe yelled.

The group’s attention was on Joe. They didn’t hear him enter the room and were surprised to see him there. Joe sat down and stared down at his hands. He didn’t want to talk to anyone, but he knew that his friends would want to know what was going on.

“Is that blood?” Brad asked and pointed to Joe’s shirt.

“Probably, Crystal was covered in it,” Joe said flatly.

“Is she going to be alright?” Mike asked.

“I…I don’t know,” Joe said.

He told the group what he did know after that. Everyone was in the state of shock because no one could believe that things were so bad. Towards the end of the conversation, Joe broke down. He couldn’t take that all this was happening to Crystal.

“It’s gonna be okay, man,” Mike said as he hugged him.

“I’m sorry, Joe,” Cali said.

Shelli was crying too because it was getting to her as well. Rob was hugging her and trying to console her as well. Brad felt so guilty because he never meant for any of this to happen.

The group had been waiting a long time. Joe was pacing the room and pleading for Crystal not to die. Shelli had actually dozed off on Rob’s shoulder. Cali and Chester went outside to smoke a cigarette and talk. The rest of the group was still sitting there, waiting for any word about Crystal’s condition.

“Is a Joe Hahn here?” a doctor asked.

The group perked up and even Shelli woke up when they heard that. Joe walked up to the doctor and talked to him. The doctor told him that Crystal was going to have to undergo surgery because she was bleeding internally.

“We managed to stabilize her for a moment, but we don’t know how long that will last. I thought you’d like to talk to her before we started the treatment,” the doctor explained.

“She’s awake?” Joe asked.

“Yes and she’s been asking for you,” the doctor replied.

“Can the others see her too?” Joe asked.

“I guess, but it will need to be quick,” the doctor replied.

As the doctor and Joe were talking, Cali and Chester came back into the waiting room. They were about to ask what was going on when Joe came over to the group.

“She’s awake, but she needs surgery. The doctor said that we can go talk to her before they start though,” Joe said.

The group nodded in response and they all followed the doctor to Crystal’s room.
